THanks for making the list! I think someone suggested Snow Flower and The Secret Fan (which is one book not two). I second that recommendation.

Someone also suggested 'The Actor and the Housewife' which is also one book, not two :)

I love The Ladies Auxiliary. It is the story of how a new and unconventional convert affects an orthodox Jewish community. If you have ever worked with women at church, you will identify with the various characters. It is really a fabulous book.

"The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery is thoroughly charming, and I do enjoy the John Steinbeck books. My favorite big one is "East of Eden" and shorter one, "Cannery Row," but there is something rough and powerful about "To a God Unknown." "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" by Murial Spark" is lovely, and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" Michael Chabon is a hoot. For laughs, "A Prayer for Owen Meany" and for a surprisingly touching story, "Cider House Rules" both by John Irving. Page for page, the shortest book with the highest pay off I've read is J.M. Coetzee's "Disgrace." There you go.
