the carrot and red pepper soup
turned out so yummy
and it's so fall-ish
so here's the recipe

Carrot and Red Pepper Soup
Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone
Deborah Madison
2 T. butter or olive oil
1 red bell pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
2 cups diced onion
1 lb. carrots, thinly sliced
2 T. white rice
Sea salt and freshly milled pepper
2 T. parsley, chopped
3 T. dill chopped or 1 1/2 T. dried dill
Grated zest and juice of 1 orange
6 cups water or basic vegetable stock
Melt the butter in a soup pot and add the pepper, onion, carrots, rice and 1 teaspoon sea salt. Cook over medium heat, covered until the onion has softened completely, about 10 minutes, stirring several times. Add a grind of pepper, the parsley, dill, orange zest, juice and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer, partially covered, until the rice is cooked, about 25 minutes. Cool briefly, then puree all but a cup or two of the soup and return it to the pot. Taste for salt, season with pepper, garnish and serve. This soup may be served hot as well as chilled.
note: I used 1T dried parsley, instead of fresh and I pureed the whole soup. so yummy!

second note: a friend of mine started a blog to share vegetarian and vegan recipes HERE if you're interested.

we went to danehy park

for the cambridge city family festival last saturday. it was so much fun. they gave out all kinds of freebies including kites, shirts, food, books, slinkies, frisbees, and lots of other goodies. atticus got a free book from the cambridge city library, he choose the one about trucks and promptly read it atop his papa's head!

kid's crafts

making his own bracelet which he had to wear as an anklet

several fire trucks, ambulances, etc. were also there for the kids to climb through. the fire station was also giving out free emergency preparedness kits - really nice, complete ones in red cross backpacks, etc. apparently they attended the enrichment activity on getting your 72 hour kits put together and thought they'd do it for everyone. it was pretty great!

atticus couldn't get over the wheel while we awaited our turn to drive the truck

but at last he had his turn and never wanted to get out

atticus i totally don't blame you for not digging the so creepy clown on scary stilts.
stilts have creeped me out for a long time!

they had little kiddie rides and bounce houses as well. the bug wasn't tall enough for the rides but they did have a "little kids" session on the bounce house. however all the other "little kids" weren't so little and i was real nervous atticus was going to get pummeled. he was completely in heaven though. the kid loves to bounce and his very favorite is to jump up and land on his bum, which he does everywhere, the couch, my bed, his crib, my belly, etc.

he totally held his own with the big kids. we were dying laughing while he was dying and going to heaven. for real, never seen a happier chap.

action shot, in mid-jump/bum bounce

ok so we really really died laughing when the worker guy told all the kids their time was up and please get off. atticus wasn't having it. every other child exited as asked, but not mine. he was in his own little world, so happy to bounce and land on his bum. he just kept bouncing and bouncing. everyone was laughing. finally we informed the worker guy that someone would have to go get him, there was no way he'd be exiting his dream bounce house by his own free will and choice.

personal escort to the exit

while we tried to watch a magic show atticus wandered away and found this little forest with water just asking to have rocks thrown into it. such a little boy!

before heading home we stopped at the tot lot and let our tot tot about for a while.
love the static in his hair here.

finally a stop at the soccer field on our way to the car so atticus could run through the goal and think he was real funny

and get a little taste of the goal as well

it was an awesome day! we are having the best fall - let's all pray it sticks around for a while!

18 week belly

we had our ultrasound yesterday...and...

it's a BOY!!!

we are so excited! so much for my "girl vibes!" girl vibes, shmirl vibes! i thought that since i felt a little different this pregnancy that it was maybe a girl but to be honest i felt a little relieved when she told us it's a boy. baby boy feels familiar to me and i'm so excited for atticus to have a little brother. it's going to be hard to choose a comparable name for boy #2 so we're just considering naming him atticus the second...
the ultrasound was just as magical as when we did it the first time with atticus. the mini was wiggling around all crazy, clearly as hyper and busy as his big brother. he just looked so precious and sweet to me i gladly admit to the tear that made it's way down my cheek. i also admit that when the tech lady walked out of the room for a minute i totally grabbed the ultrasound thingy (only because darek dared me to!) and put it up to my belly so that we could just watch little dude kick around for a while. then the lady totally walked back into the room so fast before i could replace it, caught red handed. i was for sure so embarrassed but oh well! we celebrated baby boy #2 with brunch at iHop ( cream for breakfast, always appropriate for special occasions) and a little family outing downtown (pictures pending).
my nesting instincts kicked in big time yesterday. now that we know what we are having i feel like i can really start planning. i've been planning and scheming on some major apartment clean out and deep cleaning and space making and furniture rearranging to make this a four person livable space. i'm kind of excited about it and am definitely glad that i have 5+ months to make it all happen! i suppose these plans also include digging my maternity clothes out of storage and getting some laundry done...although i'm much more inclined to just go shopping for new maternity clothes...we'll see if i can budget that it.
have a beautiful fall day! we are headed to the family festival at denahy park. maybe we'll see you there!

twenty-two months old
my sweetest son ~
today you are 22 months old. i can't believe how the time is flying and you've somehow turned into a little boy instead of a little baby overnight. you've needed lots of extra snuggles lately which i am more than happy to give! maybe you're sensing your first little sibling's coming arrival and you want extra mommy time. i've been cherishing every moment of my atticus-only time as much as possible. today you fell asleep on my shoulder at nap time. it's rare that i ever get to see you sleep since you rarely sleep anywhere but your crib, but today i just held you and rocked you and enjoyed every second of it.
coloring is your newest obsession
i've been cleaning crayon off the floor, the couch, my clothes, your clothes, your face, my face, everywhere for days. you can't get enough.

i interrupted your coloring to take a picture

it made you sad

today you asked to put your boots and i asked you to pose for the camera
this was your pose
the classic atticus crouch

then you posed with your blocks
and i got a good shot of your still uncut curls

tonight at bedtime we went for a bike ride instead
and got ice cream at JP Licks

it was the perfect end to the perfect day

i love you sweet son

another one bites the dust
today it was the other green crayon
green must taste best

sorry for the post lackage of late. we've been busy half the time and real tired the other half the time. i mean REAL tired! is it this baby-growing business? all i want to do is sleep. why don't we humans adopt the ever-brilliant animalistic life style of hibernation? how great would that be?

ok, now that that's out of my system - i did real live menu planning this week and made a real live grocery list and went to the real live grocery store to buy all the real live ingredients. would you like to know what we'll be eating this week for dinner? i figured you'd say that...

here goes:
monday - cobb salad (it was so great i might make it again tonight in addition to...)
tuesday - fajitas and spanish rice and veggies
wednesday - roasted eggplant, humus, pitas and yogurt sauce ala this site
thursday - pam's salad (that's you pam s! ever since you brought that yummy salad to institute months ago i can't get enough of it!) and carrot soup also ala this site
friday - homemade pizza (maybe BBQ chicken pizza...mmm!) and salad
saturday - favorite stir fry ala packer
sunday - ham and potato soup (also ala packer) and cornbread

would you like some recipes? i hear you salivating!

today it was the green crayon
everyday atticus spends time coloring
then he chooses a crayon
and eats it

we've had a really fun few days since we got the iBert baby bike seat. this things is so rad, he rides up front with me, his legs straddling the handle bars. i'll have to take a picture with atticus in the seat with his sweet helmet on. he loves his helmet, keeps it on after we get home from our bike rides. eventually he asks to take it off and then he scratches all over his head. it must feel like taking your hair out of a ponytail.

we rode the bike along the bike path all the way downtown to go to the public library for singing time this morning. atticus was in heaven the whole way. why didn't we make this investment at the beginning of summer? der!

i'm so excited for the weekend. this is such a fun time of year in new england with all the fall festivals and farms and fairs and corn mazes and apple picking and the charles river sing (sunday evening, FYI) and all the fun things to do. the weather is (mostly) amazing and we've got to enjoy every second because i suspect that winter is sneaking up on us.
have a lovely, green crayon, weekend!

the mormon rap

i got called into the young women's program the second week in our new ward. we're working with the youth this month to make a "standards video" and we're using this for inspiration...

and we might add in a touch of this

curious george day

we are lucky that on this rainy, yucky, husbandless/fatherless saturday we had somewhere fun to go! the boston public library hosted a curious george day to commemerate george's birthday.

i tried to get a picture of atticus with george but he didn't want to approach him without me holding him. ironically, later on i couldn't keep atticus away from george. he'd bolt away and cut in line to try to get to george. so curious. the man with the yellow hat also made an appearance but we didn't want to fight the crowds to get that picture.

he for sure did not want to give george a high five either

they also had singing time and story reading time

and atticus got to color his very own curious george birthday hat.
and play on the library computer, which he very much preferred.

in the huge auditorium they had curious george cartoons playing.
atticus folded himself up in his seat and clapped when each cartoon started.

and only my child felt the need to climb up and down the stairs for half the time and run across the stage, jumping off and running back, the rest of the time. i love that he sat down on the stage to watch once the next cartoon started. such a fan.
i had to laugh while he was coloring his george crafts. he was so excited he kept running away but still wanted to color so he'd come running back. i didn't get the best of it but here's what i got.

happy birthday george!

newest hobby
so brave

in honor of my new mixing bowls
that i've needed for a long time
some easy recipes
whole wheat pancakes
2 c. whole wheat flour
2 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
2 eggs
2 c. milk
2 T. vegetable oil
mix and make
so yummy and so easy, i make these at least once a week
and atticus goobles them up too
fresh guacamole
i've been craving me some mad amounts of mexican food
and i make this almost every other day
(can cut recipe in half)
4 large avocados
1 large tomato, diced
1/2 large onion, diced
1/2 c cilantro (i skip this, still yummy)
1/2 c basic salsa (i also skip this, but it gives an extra kick)
salt and pepper to taste
juice of one lime (this is my favorite part)
peel and mash avocados, reserve the pit, mix in all other ingredients. put avocado pits back into the dish, this helps keep the avocados from turning black. eat with delicious hint of lime tortilla chips - so delicious!
of course, this is how atticus thinks my new bowls should be used

have a yummy day!
